Lesson 5 of 10
Your W-4 and why a big tax refund isn't free money
When you start a job, you fill out a W-4 form.
It tells your employer how much tax to hold back from each paycheck.
Hold back too much, and you get a refund next spring.
Hold back too little, and you owe money. You might pay a penalty too.
Example: a $1,200 refund
Refund in spring$1,200
Months it was held back12
Extra money you could have had each month$100
A refund is your own money, returned late, with no interest.
The fix is free. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator, then give your employer a new W-4.
Key idea
Aim for a small refund or a small bill. That means your paychecks are about right.
